Preserve the Tradition of the Easter Basket
Easter is a time when people often make, give and get Easter baskets. They make for gracious arrangements, as well as for gifts especially for children. They date back virtually forever, and spread delight to many families on Easter.
Basket weaving goes back thousands of years; in fact there are examples of geological dating back to 8000 BC. Hunter’s gatherers used baskets to carry the nuts, grains and fruits that they found in the wild. People now use Easter baskets to carry or hold the design eggs so popular on Easter. The ancient baskets were woven from materials at hand, like palms or even grass. But now Easter baskets are often plastic, with tissue patterns on them.
It can be a great deal of fun to make Easter baskets. One good point is to buy the materials the previous holiday, when prices dip just after the holiday. Children enjoy Easter baskets filled with products like candy, plastic eggs containing small treats and packages. Give teenagers things they would like such as some gas money or tickets to a show that allow them to skip a chore or sleep in on a Saturday.
You can even make Easter baskets out of cake. Hollow out a regular cake, use licorice for the handle, and then fill it with common Easter products. Not only can you now personalize the contents, but the basket is edible. It might not be a good idea to frost this type of basket.
The basket for the Easter baskets can be other things found around the house or at the store. Fill a bucket or straw hat with grass and an instant basket substitute. Kids might also enjoy wrapping a plastic container or a bowl with colorful weave paper. Older kids might enjoy turning the entire kitchen table into a massive Easter basket covered with grass filled with jelly beans, candy and enjoy it with their friends.
For those with more money than time to make Easter baskets there are many web sites that sell pre-made baskets. Some truly adorable theme baskets can be had for under $100. For the husband and wife, consider that Easter baskets can holds jewelery or
even keys to a new car.
More than 90% of children in the U.S.A. get Easter baskets. Those baskets have chocolate candy and eggs and other unique arrangements in them, that’s a good deal of Easter stuff. Stores do a great deal of job merchandising all of these items. Not long ago Catholics carried food, in baskets, to the church to be blessed at Easter.
Things may change over time, but Easter baskets are here to stay. Creating them yourself can be even more fun than receiving one as a gift.
